Book Review: Me Before You (Ein ganzes halbes Jahr)

Not long after ‘Love, Rosie’, the typical romance-comedy drama starring by Britons will steal the light with another adaptation book-to-movie ‘Me Before You’ by Jojo Moyes. The movie itself will be released around June 2016 played by Emilia Clarke (Games of Thrones and Sam Claflin (Hunger Games). So will it be like Mother Dragons meets the winner Tribute? :). I supposed Sam has been snatched girl audience in romantic-comedy drama in ‘Love, Rosie’ and the producer hope to gain success just like it was.

The story spanned for six months of Louisa Clark, once a café waitress in Buttered Bun and then loose her job since it will be closed down. Having only works there for the entire life, she has no adequate skills to easily finding job again. Back and forth in the Job Center she finally takes offer as a caregiver of quadriplegic tycoon who can only move his body from neck to the upper, Will Traynor.

Instead of her lack of skills as caregiver, Camilla, Will’s mother still hire her in hoping that she can change Will’s mood and most importantly, his suicidal attempt. Being cynical as hell and shove her away, Will begin to have interest in her personality. It surprise him of Lou’s complacency towards her own life, never been anywhere outside hometown, still live with her parents and not interested in doing anything aside her boring routines.

Lou then knew that the main hope of his mother is to change his controversial decision to go to Dignitas (Swiss assisted dying organization). In her attempts to change his mind she sways by Will’s effort to change her mind in seeing the world. To distract his desperation, she plot many plans to make Will see that aside from his physical limitation he still can enjoy life. Moyes depict insight to the characters’ mind but none of Will’s mind since she thinks it will give the reader a hint of the story end.

Being social media savvy, the movie promotes #LiveBoldly which depicts message of this book. And, of course who else the musician that can infuse the atmosphere of bitterly sweet romance if it’s not Ed Sheeran, a 2016 Grammy winner for Best Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. I should say that his soundtrack for The Fault in Our Stars, All of The Stars, is way much enticing that the movie itself. This time his single ‘Photograph’ is chosen to be the OST.

The writer, Jojo Moyes once a journalist for 10 years in several publications such South China Morning Post and The Independent before she decided to write novel on her own. Just like best-selling or big hit books or movies, she wrote sequel titled ‘After You’ which tells Louisa’s life after Will’s death. But I’m being skeptical that this will make a big hit again.

Though Moyes offer another poor girl meet rich man, but Will and Lou story teach us to #LiveBoldly, explore the world, don’t get easily satisfy, push your boundaries and yet being sincere in loving. You can see the trailer here. Nah did i just review book or upcoming movie? (***)
